Barangay Health Workers

Barangay Health Workers are accredited to function as such by the local government with the guidelines promulgated by the Philippines Department of Health, as defined in Sec. 3 of Republic Act No, 7883 ( The Barangay Health Workers’ Benefits and Incentives Act of 1995).

Barangay Health Workers (BHWs) perform significant role in the communities. They are the frontline workers supporting the delivery of primary health care services. They are mandated to perform different tasks in responding to the health demands in the respective household catchment areas they are serving.

Barangay Health Worker (BHW) is a category of health care providers in the Philippines. They undergo a basic training program under any accredited government and non-government organization and render primary health care services in the barangay. They perform significant role in the communities. They are the frontline workers supporting the delivery of primary health care services and are mandated to perform different tasks in responding to the health demands in the respective household catchment areas they are serving.  Presently, there are 8,168 Barangay Health Workers in Bohol.  They work hand in hand with other members of the health team (doctors, nurses, and midwives) in promoting the health programs and services in the community. They also serve as community organizers who provide instruction and information about health.

To recognize the importance of BHWs and to set up a system for them to gain access to a package of resources and opportunities for improving their personal and professional development,

Capability building activities such as trainings, orientations, reorientations and refresher courses to barangay health workers had been conducted by the DOH-Regional Office VII, the Provincial Health Office and other Non-Government Organizations (NGOs). For year 2021, the Bohol Barangay Health Workers received a Performance Based Incentive worth 150,000 to be used for their continuing development of our accredited BHW members.
